- Now in its 45th Sapphire Anniversary season, The Shakespeare
Theatre of New Jersey (formerly called New Jersey Shakespeare
Festival) is one of the leading Shakespeare theatre companies
in the nation, and the longest-running on the east coast.
- Since 1963, the company has played to more than one million
patrons. In 2005 alone, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey
will bring its productions and education programs to 100,000
adults, teens and children.
- In the last decade, the company's budget, staff size,
program offerings and square footage have all more than
quadrupled.
- In its entire four decades of operation, the company has
had only two artistic directors.
- It is estimated that The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey
generates close to $5 million worth of economic activity
annually for the local region.
- The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey provides more education
programs for young artists, young audiences and adults than
any other professional theatre in the state, the largest
of which is the region's most comprehensive and largest
Shakespeare touring company - Shakespeare LIVE!
- Annual company size now numbers close to 300 members each
season, including staff, artists of all kinds, technicians,
craftspeople and young students of theatre.
- During the company's landmark 40th Anniversary Season,
in 2002, The Star-Ledger named The Shakespeare
Theatre of New Jersey "Regional Theatre of the Year," and
the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation awarded the company a
prestigious Strategic Partnership Grant in the amount of
$1 million, "in recognition of the artistry, achievements
and leadership of this acclaimed Madison, New Jersey-based
performing arts and education organization."
- Rumor has it that the old Bowne Theatre - which after
extensive renovation was reopened in 1998 as the state-of-the-art
F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre - was inhabited by a ghost
who was often "felt" lurking about the theatre. He seems
much happier now in his new home.
- The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey's prominent company
of artists can be seen year-round in feature films, favorite
television shows and on Broadway stages!
