Richard III
By William Shakespeare
Audience Reviews

It was a privilege
to be in the audience and watch Paul Mullins become Richard
lll! At intermission I realized that his was the best performance
I have seen this season. By the end of the production, I had
to amend that. Paul Mullins' performance was the best I have
EVER seen anywhere! He was chillingly evil and the role was
so demanding, I can't imagine how exhausted he must have been
at the end. The entire cast was wonderful, but the night belonged
to Mr. Mullins. Don't miss this play and don't miss the performance
of a lifetime!!

I have seen a number
of productions of Richard III, including Denzel Washington's
performance for the Public Theater, but I have yet to see
a Richard as fully realized as this production is. This was
without doubt one of the most intelligent productions of the
play I have seen. The dark cabaret elements, certain aspects
of lighting, and a number of other metatheatrical elements
(scenes of Richard observing another scene, Buckingham's stage
direction of the commoners, etc.) reveal the director's keen
insight into the way much of the play meditates on the importance
of stagecraft and rhetoric for early modern english statecraft.
All of this is remarkable, but perhaps the most remarkable
aspect of the play--and one I hope is not overlooked by the
audience--is the crucial roles played by the four women in
the play. Sadly, the theatrical history of the play suggests
that women have not been well-served by most productions of
Richard III. This was manifestly not the case here. Each of
the four female actors contributed decisively to the action.
My one regret is that you do not tape your productions, as
I would love to have a copy of this production available for
future students. Congratulations on a magnificent production.
