About the Program

The Junior Corps is a two-week summer acting intensive designed for all types of kids— from beginning performers to budding stars. Participants will receive professional-caliber instruction from Shakespeare Theatre staff and artists in the basic skills of a classical actor, culminating in an ensemble performance based on a work of classic literature. The program also fosters a sense of self-confidence, creativity and teamwork in the setting of a professional theatre company.

Members of the Junior Corps participate in daily classes (Monday-Friday, 1:00-6:00pm) in areas including movement, voice, stage combat, physical characterization, improvisation, monologues, Shakespearean text analysis, and more, under the direction of The Shakespeare Theatre's Education Staff. The daily activities are varied, fast-paced, and exciting! Participants also have the chance to meet with The Shakespeare Theatre's professional resident artists in master classes and discussions.

The focus of the Junior Corps program is ensemble— and each session culminates in a final presentation that involves all the students in retelling a piece of classic literature through ensemble performance technique. In recent summers, the Junior Corps final project pieces have included adaptations of Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Tempest, The Winter's Tale and Prometheus Bound. The final project is performed at noon on the last day, a Saturday, so that parents, friends, and members of The Shakespeare Theatre's professional company can attend.

As young company members of The Shakespeare Theatre, Junior Corps students are encouraged to stay connected with The Shakespeare Theatre beyond their two-week enrollment. During the program, the students receive usher training, and are asked to volunteer in the front-of-house at least 2-3 times for the Shakespeare Theatre’s Main Stage and Outdoor Stage performances. Ushering provides students with an opportunity to see Main Stage and Outdoor Stage productions free of charge, and to continue to learn about the world of professional theatre. The members of the Junior and Senior Corps are some of our most active and dedicated volunteers throughout the year.

Attendance Policy
We at The Shakespeare Theatre believe that commitment and dedication are important components of the theatre education experience. Junior Corps members are held to the same high standards as the rest of our company. Each student must attend all classes, workshops and rehearsals, and must be on time. Students may not arrive late or leave early. All students will be involved in the rehearsal of a piece to be performed at the end of each session, and their absence will impair the work of the group as a whole. Students will be excused only for illnesses, family emergencies, or pre-arranged conflicts.
